UPCOMING EVENTS
Our March luncheon was scotched by weather but April's get-together approaches on Saturday the 24th at 11:30am at El Padrino restaurant in Glen Eagle. Please email or phone hosts John and Jill Reid at 719-495-4092 or johnereid@earthlink.net mailto:johnereid@earthlink.net or jjillpdonahue@earthlink.net <mailto:jjillpdonahue@earthlink.net>. To get there take I-25 to exit 156A Glen Eagle, then east onto North Gate Blvd, right onto Voyager Parkway, make U-turn at Spectrum Loop onto northbound Voyager Pkwy, restaurant on right at 13425 Voyager Parkway (phone number 719-487-2727). The restaurant is about a mile from the interstate.
Our first campout of the season is fast approaching at Trinidad Lake State Park 3 miles west of Trinidad May 21-23. Yonce and Marcums are hosts. At this point we are not making reservations but may need to. In any event please let me know as soon as possible if you plan to attend; phone 303-681-3893 or email fredyonce@aol.com <mailto:fredyonce@aol.com>. Below we have repeated the details about this and subsequent campouts for this season from the March newsletter.
Trinidad Lake State Park is a pleasant campground newly renovated with electric hookups at all sites and water and dump stations, 3 miles from historic Trinidad and with scenic drives to the east and west. Our campout is the weekend before the Memorial Day weekend and we do not anticipate a need to reserve sites, but we will watch the website and make reservations if necessary. Camping fee is $20 per night and daily entrance fee is $6. If you are age 64 or older you can buy a 1-year Aspen Leaf pass good for free admission to all state parks and half-price camping (actually $11 at Trinidad) Sunday through Thursday. The state legislature may soon pass a bill offering lifetime Aspen Leaf passes for $150. The reservation fee, if necessary, is an additional $10 per site. Please inform host Fred Yonce as soon as you know you plan to attend.
Note the change in RV park for the Grand Junction campout. After leaving me hanging for three weeks the owner notified me they couldn't accommodate all our rigs. But we have reserved our group for their sister park, equally nice though different, Monument RV Resort, just west of Grand Junction near the exit for Fruita and the Colorado National Monument. It's one of the highest-rated RV parks in the state, with lots of mature trees and spectacular views. They are holding 20 sites for us, with an expansion capability to 25, through June 4. There are 14 (expandable to 19 if needed) long pull-through sites with full hookups priced at $34.94 incl. tax and 6 water/electric sites at $29.94 with tax. There will be no $5 per rig charge for food for this campout--the wagon master will donate his free site for this expense. To sign up please notify Fred Yonce and phone Cricket at the resort Monday through Wednesday at 1-888-977-6777 to make an individual reservation. Tell her you are with the Holiday Rambler group (reservation #G32340) and give her your rig details and credit card number; you will be subject to a one-night charge for cancellations less than 24 hours before the arrival date. Hosts Pfarrers and Reids will be placed in adjacent 65' pull-throughs with facing entry doors.
The August 13-15 campout is at a beautifully located resort on the banks of the Arkansas River just east of Salida. We have 15 sites reserved through the end of July (later reservations will be subject to availability). There are 4 sites in River Row (11-14) backed up to the bank accommodating rigs 36', 38' (2), and 40' long, priced at $35 plus tax. There are 2 very private back-in sites (21 and 22) on the row parallel to and opening out to the river at 40' and 60' priced at $47. There are 3 sites in D Row (1, 2, and 5) across from River Row--1 and 2 are pull-throughs near the community room/patio and will be occupied by our hosts Gaesslers and Thorntons. Reserved sites 1 in B Row and 3 and 5 in C Row are pull-throughs, and B 5 and C 1 and 2 are back-ins. Sites in rows B, C, and D are $31. All sites are full hookup and 50 amp, except River Row 12 (36') which is 30 amp. To sign up please notify Fred Yonce and phone 1-888-444-3626 with your rig details and credit card number. Be sure to tell them you're with the Holiday Rambler group. Corrina is our contact there.
As provided by chapter by-laws, campout hosts will be reimbursed for documented expenses for food and supplies up to $6 per person. Hosts must present receipts or, for items from their home stocks, an itemized list with estimated costs to the Treasurer for reimbursement.
See you soon!

HAPPENINGS April 2009
Seventeen people had a great time at our April luncheon at Fargo's Pizza in Colorado Springs, hosted by the recently returned Tucson snowbirders Bill and Carol Gaessler. Bruce Greve and Ron and Mim Thornton were also back from wintering in warmer climes, and the Marcums and Pfarrers had just returned from Good Sam's rally in Albuquerque. Ron and Joy Poucher had finally dug out from deep snows atop Coal Creek Canyon to attend. All expressed deep sympathy for the loss of Kathie Marcum's mother, Kaye Rogers, who often accompanied the Marcums to luncheons and campouts.
CAMPOUT TIME!
Our first campout of the year is coming up at Bonny Lake State Park. Pfarrers and Reids are hosting, and Clements, Brauns, Marcums, Gaesslers, Thorntons, and Yonces are joining them. Any others wishing to attend, please contact Ric Pfarrer at 719-495-1853 or ric pfarrer. For a map and directions go to our website Colorado Ramblers , click on "Pikes Peak", then "Club Calendar", then "click for campgnd details". Basically, from Colorado Springs take US 24 to Limon, then I-70 to Burlington, thence north on US 385 23 miles to County Road 2, then right (east) 3.5 miles to the park entrance. From Denver take I-70 to Burlington. We will be in the Wagon Wheel Campground, with electric hookups at each site and water and dump station in the area. Most rigs will arrive on Thursday. For a map of this campground go to <http://parks.state.co.us/Parks/BonnyLake/Camping>, scroll down to "Wagon Wheel Campground" and click on "View the Campground map." Only 4 of 87 sites are currently reserved, though there will, of course, be walk-ups in some sites. Loops C and D each have 9 back-in sites (all unreserved) and Loop F has 12 pull-through sites (2 reserved: 56 and 58). Firstcomers on Thursday should select the best one of these three loops with enough unoccupied sites, and the rest of us will look for your location. The pull-through sites in Loop F will accommodate any of our rigs. The back-in sites in Loops C and D are all 40' except for 22 (45') and 26 (30'--Yonce will fit) in C and 29, 30, and 34 (all 35') in D Since Loops C and D have only 9 sites each for our 8 rigs and there may be several walkups besides us, Loop F may be our best bet. In addition to the 10 unreserved 50' pull-throughs in this loop there are seven long back-ins--43-47 and 60, 61--all 60' except 44 (55') and 47 (45').
For information about fees go to the April newsletter, which is also on our website. The hosts will shortly send an email re meal plans and what you should bring to share. Remember there will be a $5 charge per rig to defray food costs. We will have information at the campout re sightseeing opportunities in Burlington for those who are interested.
Those planning to attend our buddy campout June 19-21 at Pagosa Riverside Campground (also see April newsletter for details) must call the park by June 1 to assure your reservation--they will need a credit card number and details about your rig. The toll-free number is 1-888-785-3234. Be sure to tell them you are with the Pikes Peak Holiday Ramblers. We have 15 sites being held until June 1 and our current preliminary count is 10, including hosts Pouchers and Yonces, Reids, Marcums, Pfarrers, Van Aukens, Gaesslers(?), and three guest rigs. Others wishing to attend please contact the park and Fred Yonce at 303-681-3893 or fredyonce@aol.com

HAPPENINGS April 2009
Eight people gathered for a delicious post-storm luncheon at Bella Panini in Palmer Lake on Saturday March 28, hosted by Fred Yonce (the Pouchers were still snowed-in atop Coal Creek Canyon and the Legleiters had a funeral to attend). Just back from the winter in Tucson, the Gaesslers are hosting our April lunch at 11:30 on Saturday the 25th at Fargo's Pizza Co., 2910 E. Platte Ave., just west of the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs. RSVP to 719-597-6396 or leoracarol@aol.com <mailto:leoracarol@aol.com>; they can give you directions if you need them.
We are sorry to report that Kathie Marcum's mother Kaye Rogers, who often accompanied the Marcums to luncheons and campouts, passed away at the Marcum home in Pueblo on April 11. Donations in memoriam will be forwarded to the Pueblo YMCA or Sangre de Cristo Hospice.
HRRVC members are encouraged to cast their ballots for the new Region VII Director by the first of May. You were also recently informed that new owners of Holiday Rambler RVs are no longer given a free first-year membership to the club, because of the chapter 11 bankruptcy of parent company Monaco.
CAMPOUT SEASON!
Our first campout of the year is coming up May 15-17 at beautiful Bonny Lake State Park about 25 miles north of Burlington. Pfarrers and Reids are hosting, and Clements, Gaesslers, and Yonce have also signed up to attend. Please let Fred Yonce know if you plan to come. Reservations are not (so far) necessary for these dates, and we will camp as a group in either loop C or D of the Wagon Wheel Campground. There is electricity at each site and water and dump station in the area. Fees are $18 for each of the two nights, plus a park entrance fee of $6 per day (2 days for our campout), or you can buy a one-year pass for $60 or Aspen Leaf pass for $30 for Colorado residents 64 years or older (free if you are really old--born in 1922 or earlier). The annual passes are good for entrance to all the state parks for one year from the date of purchase, and holders of the Aspen Leaf may also camp for half-price Sundays through Thursdays (keep that in mind if you want to come early or stay late at Bonny). Guest rigs are welcome.
Our buddy campout is scheduled for June 19-21 at Pagosa Riverside Campground just east of Pagosa Springs. It's a pleasant RV park right on the San Juan River and an adjacent lake and we have full hookups for $32 per night. They are holding 15 sites for us until June 1 so call before then to make your reservation--they will need a credit card number and details about your rig. Be sure to tell them you are with the Pikes Peak Holiday Rambler group. The toll-free number is 1-888-785-3234. Pouchers and Yonce are hosts and we will have a covered area available adjacent to the office/store for gatherings if inclement weather; let them know when you make your reservation. Remember your buddies!
